About

Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute (VPCI) is a premier institution for postgraduate medical education and research, devoted to the study of chest diseases. The institute is maintained by and affiliated to University of Delhi and is funded entirely by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Joined the above prestigious institution through Delhi PG Medical Entrance Examination 2006 and underwent a three year postgraduate residency programme in pulmonary medicine. The residency programme had various academic and clinical activities including extensive training in outpatient and inpatient management of tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases, emergency ward management, respiratory critical care medicine and sleep medicine. The training also included working in various departments and laboratories:
  • Intensive respiratory care unit: Mechanical ventilation (Siemens Servo-i), non invasive ventilation ( RespmedBiPAP and CPAP machines), intensive care monitoring, chest tube drainage, pleurodesis, arterial blood gas analysis and other critical care activities.
  • Sleep laboratory: Diagnostic Polysomnography, Split Night Polysomnography with CPAP titration, Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT) and Maintenance of Wakefulness Testing (MWT).
  • Pulmonary function laboratory: Computerized lung function testing that include spirometry, lung volume estimation by helium dilution method, diffusion studies by CO single breath method, bronchodilator response, exercise bronchoprovocation testing and histamine challenge testing.
  • Fibreoptic Bronchoscopy and Autofluorescence Video Bronchoscopy: Bronchoscopic visualization of tracheobronchial tree, bronchoalveolarlavage(BAL), endobronchial and transbronchial lung biopsy(EBLB and TBLB) and transbronchial needle aspiration(TBNA) for various respiratory diseases.
Allergy skin testing and immunotherapy for aeroallergens. Tobacco cessation clinic. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation clinic. Special postings during residency period included: Posted in New Delhi Tuberculosis Centre, New Delhi and RajanBabu Tuberculosis Hospital, Delhi for a period of two months from 15.11.08 to 31.12.08. During this period, the training included management of MDR tuberculosis, Tubercular empyema, Tuberculosis and Diabetes, various complications of tuberculosis, their medical and surgical management as well as public health aspects of tuberculosis control in India.
