Understanding the structure of Hip

Our Hip is that joint of the body where the thigh bone (femur) meets the pelvic bones. The hip joint acts like a ball-and-socket joint giving our hip the required motion needed for activities like walking, climbing, bending, etc.

Most of the strong muscles of our body connect and cross through the hip joint, thus making it responsible for providing stability to the body and also providing mobility during daily life activities.

Anatomical structure of the hip majorly consists of – bones and joints, cartilages, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels and bursae. They all work in close coordination for the proper functioning of the hip joint.

Total Hip Replacement Surgery in India

A total hip replacement is a surgery to replace the worn out or damaged hip joint with an artificial one. It is also called hip arthroplasty. The surgery is usually done to relieve pain and restore mobility in the hip joint. It can be done on both hips at the same time or one at a time, depending on the condition of the patient.

The main reason for having a hip replacement surgery is to relieve pain in the hip joint that has become severely damaged due to arthritis or injury. The damaged cartilage and bone is removed and replaced with an artificial joint made of metal, ceramic or plastic. This new joint will allow smooth movement of the hip and will help reduce pain.

Total hip replacement surgery is a life-changing event. For patients who have been living with chronic pain and limited mobility, the surgery can provide relief and renewed freedom. The decision to have the surgery is not one that is made lightly, however, as it is a major operation with potential risks and complications.

Patients who are considering total hip replacement surgery in India should do their research to ensure they are making the best decision for their individual needs. There are many factors to consider, such as the experience of the surgeon, the success rate of the hospital where the surgery will be performed, and the cost of the procedure.

Making the decision to have total hip replacement surgery is a personal one, but for those who are ready to take that step, India offers high-quality surgeons and hospitals at a fraction of the cost of other countries.

What happens during Total Hip Replacement (THR) ?

Hip replacement surgery is done under general anesthesia. Once you fall asleep, your surgeon will make a small incision at the surgical site, that is, your hip.

The muscles connected to the head of the femur are carefully removed to access the hip joint. Now the ball portion of the joint is skillfully cut using special equipment. This is replaced by an artificial joint.

Next, the surface of hip bone is prepared by removing disease cartilage and replacing the area by artificial socket. So the complete prosthesis or implant consists of three parts – a stem that is inserted in the femur, the ball that fits in the stem, and the cup shaped implant that is inserted in the socket area. The cup and stem are made up of metal, while the ball can be metal or ceramic. After the completion of surgery, the surgical site is closed using staples or stitches. A drain is placed in the incision for removal of fluid.

The two most common kinds of prosthesis used during Hip replacement surgery (THR) are : Cemented and Uncemented Prosthesis.
In cemented prosthesis, bone cement (often with a combination of antibiotic material) is used for fixing the implants. This cement dries quickly thus giving confidence that the implant is firmly placed. Whereas, In uncemented prosthesis the implant is textured in a way that it allows bone to grow naturally over a period of time, thus providing a long term bonding between joint and artificial materials. Decisions regarding type of prosthesis will be taken by your treating doctor.

Once the surgery is complete, you will be shifted to a recovery area where all the vitals are monitored and medicine is given for reducing pain. When your condition gets normal you will be shifted to the ward area for further management followed by discharge from the hospital.

Total hospital stay varied from 5 to 7 days.

Post-op Recovery

Once you have been discharged from the hospital and get back home, kindly consider the following points during post-op recovery period:

  • You will be asked to undergo physiotherapy after surgery for the next few weeks or months. Make sure you follow the instructions given by your physical therapist correctly.
  • Avoid lifting any heavy weight for a few months, till your doctor has allowed you for the same.
  • Do not bend or twist in a way that it strains your surgical site.
  • Avoid climbing stairs and sit only in a firm chair with a straight back. Stay away from recliners.
  • Check with your doctor regarding returning to normal daily life activities like getting back to work, driving, sexual activity, etc.

Inform your treating doctor immediately in case of following symptoms:

  • Severe pain or drainage from the surgical site.
  • Numbness in the leg or hip area.
  • High fever.
  • Redness, swelling or bleeding from the incision area.

Risks involved in the surgery

Following are the common risks involved in Total Hip Replacement Surgery:

  • Blood clotting
  • Bleeding or infection
  • Nerve injury during surgery
  • Dislocation or loosening of implant
  • Chances of getting Hip replacement surgery (THR) done for the second time as the prosthetic joint may wear out over a period of time. However, this happens in very few cases.
  • During surgery, healthy parts of the joint may get hurt.

All the above risks can be avoided or taken care of if the patient is in the right hands, that is, under the care of an expert doctor and healthcare facility. Also keep in mind that knee replacement surgery cannot yield fruitful results if the patient’s body weight is too high, as there is greater risk of the implant getting dislocated or loosen from its place.
